I am so geeked out and excited about this movie, "Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built" which is an upcoming supernatural horror film directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, and starring Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester, and Jason Clarke as Eric Price and based on the true story of the Winchester Mystery House.

I have toured the real-life Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, which is one of the weirdest tourist attractions in the world, many times over the years. It is amazing, especially if you like Victorian architecture. The haunted house, Craven Manor, in this YA urban fantasy series, the Charmed Chronicles, is closely based on the Winchester Mystery House and it's eccentric owner. Craven Manor is a gothic mansion in Ravenwood, California with close to one hundred rooms and construction started in book 1, Witchy Wickedness...

The building of Sarah Winchester's mansion started in 1884 and construction ended in 1922, and has numerous mysterious features, like doors that lead to nowhere. The Architectural style is Queen Anne Victorian. The mansion has 161 rooms now, but before the 1906 earthquake, the house had been seven stories high with over 600 rooms, but today it is only four stories.

While the house is interesting, it is Sarah Winchester, who is even more fascinating. She was a highly intelligent and complex woman, who was an inventor, a builder, and a very progressive woman for her time.

Sarah's wiki page states this about the mysterious woman; "Sarah Lockwood Winchester (1840 – September 5, 1922) was an American heiress who amassed great wealth after the death of her husband, William Wirt Winchester. Her inheritance from his estate included USD$20 million as well as a 50% holding in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which made her one of the wealthiest women in the world at the time. She is best known for using her vast fortune to continue construction on the Winchester mansion in San Jose, California, for 38 consecutive years. Popular legends, which began during her lifetime, held that she was convinced she was cursed, and the only way to alleviate it was to add on to her California home. Since her death, the sprawling Winchester Mystery House has become a popular tourist attraction, known for its staircases that lead to nowhere, and its many winding corridors..."

And she was obsessed with the number 13, which is my favorite number, too.

While I know the screenwriters had to create a story with a fictional villain, embellish and heighten the spooky elements about her supposed dealings with the occult, and try to imagine what life must've been like for Sarah, I can't wait to see this film!

Movie blurb: After the sudden death of her family, firearms heiress Sarah Winchester becomes convinced that she's haunted by the souls of those killed by guns. Winchester then decides to build an enormous mansion that's designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. When skeptical psychiatrist Eric Price visits the estate to evaluate her state of mind, he soon discovers that her obsession may not be so far-fetched after all.
